The first land grant for the community that would become Pembroke was issued in 1728. The town was initially called “Lovewell’s Town” after Captain John Lovewell, whose followers and descendants lived there. For a time, the town was known as Suncook. However, colonial Governor Benning Wentworth changed the name to Pembroke (after the ninth Earl of Pembroke in Wales) when the town was incorporated in 1759.

Pembroke became an industrial hub in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the river provided waterpower.
