A fully functioning water heater is essential for your home, ensuring consistent access to hot water for all your daily needs. However, like any major appliance, water heaters experience regular wear and tear over time.

Recognizing the early warning signs of a failing unit can save you from the stress and expense of major repairs. A failed water heater can cause thousands of dollars in water damage, so vigilance is absolutely essential.

By paying attention to how your system performs, you can address minor issues before they turn into complete breakdowns.

5 signs your water heater is failing

Catching these warning signs early will protect your home and keep your hot water flowing steadily.

• Fluctuations in water temperature: If you notice inconsistent or insufficient hot water, it could signal an issue with the heating element or the thermostat. Sudden changes from hot to cold water are frequent early indicators that your unit is struggling to keep up with demand.
• Unusual noises: Rumbling or popping sounds coming from your water heater usually indicate sediment buildup inside the tank. Over time, this buildup restricts the heating process, reducing overall efficiency and causing internal damage to the unit.
• Discolored or rusty water: Rusty water flowing from your faucets often means the inside of your water heater tank is corroding. This corrosion weakens the structural integrity of the tank and can lead to severe leaks if not addressed promptly.
• Water around the water heater: Puddles or moisture pooling around the base of your water heater point directly to a crack in the tank or loose fittings. Even a small leak can worsen rapidly, leading to significant property damage.
• Higher energy bills: A failing water heater has to work much harder to heat your water, consuming more propane in the process. This drop in efficiency will lead to a noticeable and frustrating increase in your monthly energy costs.

Annual maintenance protects your water heater

The best way to avoid unexpected breakdowns is through proactive care. We strongly recommend annual tune-ups for your water heater. Sticking to a regular maintenance schedule keeps your unit operating at maximum efficiency year-round. It also gives the skilled technicians from Johnny Prescott Oil & Propane a chance to catch minor issues that could otherwise become major malfunctions.
